The Celebrated Château de Fontainebleau

Chateau de Fontainbleau 11

Rubbing shoulders with regalia at Château de Fontainebleau in #France! #TravelwithArchie… Click To Tweet

I studied at INSEAD – a Business School (Ivy League) in a small town called Fontainebleau in France. It is an hour’s drive from the romance capital of the world – Paris!

In the evenings after school, we would wander off to explore this marvelous town sometimes in search of food and sometimes just for a long stroll to get a feel of the city which was nearly home for a long time. Fontainebleau is a typical small European town where you will find roadside cafes, boutique stores, people playing musical instruments on the roadside, the town folks sitting back and enjoying a drink like there is no tomorrow. In shot perfectly laid back! But it is beautiful and so is the life there, atleast whatever my classmates and I experienced.

Hidden away in this quaint town is Château de Fontainebleau – Palace of Fontainebleau! The Château meaning ‘Palace’ gets its name from one of the springs, the fountain de Bliaud, located now in the English garden, next to the wing of Louis XV. The palace proudly claims to have been a sovereign residence for eight centuries. Capétiens, Valois, Bourbons, Bonaparte and Orléans, all members of the French ruling dynasties, have lived within these tenacious walls. The medieval castle and later Château was also the residence of French monarchs from Louis VII through Napoleon III. Today the palace is a national museum and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Kings and queens, emperors and empresses have all endeavored to make their own modifications and embellishments to the château. The original estate quickly became a huge palace in which many momentous historical events have been played out, what with it being home to such prominent monarchs. You can read more about the history of the Château, the grand apartments it holds and the art and lots more here.

What struck me about this fascinating palace was its sheer castle-like look. I am crazy about castles and being in such places makes my mind wander into forbidden corners…. Was I also a princess who lived in such an abode once upon a time many many eons ago? Is that where my love for such acropolis comes from? Oh well! I warned you about the forbidden paths my mind could take.

Have you ever been to such a castle? Tell me about it…

Love, Archie
